Build Up Your Mathematical Skills is a series of 6 books written in accordance with the latest Ministry of Education’s Mathematics syllabus.
This series consists of topical exercises which include questions that will access pupils’ understanding of mathematical concepts, challenge pupils’ problem-solving thinking abilities and allow pupils to decide which heuristics to use to solve the unconventional questions. The mathematical skills required are indicated for all questions in the topical exercises. They include:
- Basic Mathematical Skill
Used on questions which test on mathematical concepts.
- Analytical Skill
Used on questions which need pupils to visualise and break down the problems so that they can formulate the steps to solve them.
- Critical Thinking Skill
Used on questions which require pupils to evaluate the information that is fed to them and determine how to interpret it. Rather than sticking strictly with the information presented, these questions allow pupils to consider outside information or other elements that could be of influence during the thought process.
- Problem-solving Skill
Used on questions which challenge pupils’ problem-solving abilities. Pupils need to decide which heuristics to use for the problems.
At the end of each term, a graded revision exercise is provided to evaluate pupils’ progress. Parents, teachers or tutors are encouraged to use the progress report included to provide feedback to pupils. Full worked solutions are provided to facilitate parents, tutors and teachers with the marking.
Pupils learn how to identify the appropriate skills needed to tackle questions during examinations through practising the 4 levels of skills – Basic mathematical skill, Analytical skill, Critical-thinking skill and Problem-solving skill.
- Type of mathematical skill identified for each question
- Graded revision tests
- Full worked solutions
